A Special Court for sexual offenses has been set up in Lagos, with a view to avoiding delays in the prosecution of suspects of sexual crimes.
This was disclosed yesterday, by the Chief Justice of Lagos, Justice Olufunmilayo Opeyemi-Oke, during a courtesy visit on her by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Imohimi Edgal.
Lamenting the increase in sexual related crimes in Lagos, the CJ wondered why some suspects of sexual crimes should be granted bail when the sentence of such crimes had increased to life imprisonment.
She said: “You (CP) are going to get a letter from us today (yesterday) on this administration‘s decision to set up special sexual court because the issue of rape has escalated in Lagos.
I picked a copy of newspaper and read that a father and his brother have been violating his daughter for long.
”The sentence for this type of offence has been increased to life imprisonment and no magistrate should grant such suspect bail. That is why we are setting up special sexual offences courts.”
But she declined request by the CP to establish special courts for cases such as murder and robberies, saying that it was difficult to have special courts for every type of criminal cases.
Commending the CP for a job well done at keeping Lagos safe, particularly for his efforts at smashing the Badoo cult group, the CJ stated that the dexterity with which Edgal carried on with his profession, could not have been less, considering the ‘workaholic’ governor in the state.
She also stated that her office would organise trainings for Investigating Police Officers IPO and police prosecutors in areas where there were lapses, pointing out that the Police played an important role in the administration of justice.
